Whoever believed that night-time was the only possible habitat for sparkle will have to change their mind this season. Brands such as Lanvin, Tom Ford, Phillip Lim, Alexander Wang and Isabel Marant have all decided we should metallise our wardrobes with dresses, jackets, trousers, tops, bags and shoes that glitter.
The fabric par excellence to embody this trend is lamé, a shiny, light material that, in addition to the more usual tones of gold and silver, is also available in other colours such as blue. Leather has also come to the fore in jackets, footwear and bags, still soft to the touch. And we mustn’t forget Lurex which, thanks to its elasticity, enhances the female form.
As Alber Elbaz, creative director at Lanvin, said before presenting the 2014 spring-summer collection, “Sparkle! But not like the idea of ‘bling-bling’ – sparkle as an idea of hope, positivity and light. That positive energy we all search for and that’s so essential nowadays”.
In the case of 3.1 Phillip Lim, the metallic effect has reached his collection via inspiration from minerals and multi-coloured geodes, evident in its wonderfully embroidered organza.
There’s no doubt that metallics have arrived with a bang – as you’ll realise if you stroll around Santa Eulalia.
